Ngā Hakinakina: Sports at Ngā Taiātea
Ngā Taiātea Wharekura has established 4 sports academies to reinforce our values as Maori and encourage excellence and health through the following four sports codes (Waka Ama, Basketball, Netball and Rugby).
Waka Ama: Ngā Taiātea Wharekura has a strong waka ama focus due to the strengths within the school and especially in the wider community.
This year Ngā Taiātea Wharekura won 3 of the 8 available national titles at the National Secondary School Waka Ama championships. We are thankful to the team of coaches, managers and supporting whanau.
This year 8 of our students went to Canada to compete in the world waka ama championships in Calgary. We encourage all students who are interested in waka ama to paddle for clubs during the summer vacation to both support the various clubs and for them to prepare themselves for the Ngā Taiātea waka ama training regime which starts in the beginning of the school year.
The commitment required is high, the training is demanding, and the rewards and memories are priceless. Nau mai piki mai ki runga i te kaupapa waka ama ki Taiātea.
For further details in regards to waka ama, please contact the head of the waka ama academy, Whaea Tania.
Ngā Taiātea Wharekura is thankful to the team of coaches, managers, support whanau and players who are so committed to basketball. We have 4 teams that play in the top Waikato competitions.

- Junior (Year 9 and 10) Girls
- Senior (Year 11,12 and 13) Boys
- Senior (Year 11, 12 and 13) Girls
The senior boys’ team were the national champions in 2009 and runners up at the nationals in 2010 and 2011. compete at the nationals in Nelson this year.
For further details in regards to basketball, please contact the head of the basketball academy, Matua Kevin.
The Ngā Taiātea netball academy was established this year to foster health and excellence through netball. We have 4 netball teams;
- Year 9 Team
- Year 10 Team
- Senior Development Team
- Senior Premiere Team
Although we have only just started netball seriously at Ngā Taiātea, we have had a very promising start. The Senior Premier team is doing well in their competition and the talent in the Year 10 netball team is astounding.
Our netball will continue to get stronger and when this year’s Year 10 students are in Year 12 in 2014, we intend to achieve very highly at a national level.
For further details in regards to netball, please contact the head of the netball academy, Whaea Mere.
2012 was the first year that we have had rugby at Ngā Taiātea. Our plan is to start with one team (under 15’s team) and this group of boys will pioneer rugby at Ngā Taiātea.
This team has had a good start to the Taiātea rugby journey where they have beaten some of Waikato’s top under 15 teams including the highly rated Hamilton boys under 15’s team.
We strongly encourage our boys who are interested in rugby or league to play for this team because the competition is very strong and students will gain opportunities later on in both league and rugby if they have the discipline, work ethic and commitment.
The opportunity is to return a strong Maori presence to the secondary school rugby competition on a regional and national level.
Next year we will aim to have an under 14 team and the current under 15 team will move into the under 16 grade. In 2014 we will have Ngā Taiātea’s first 1st 15 and we have high aspirations for the following year when most of this year’s under 15s are in Year 13.
