Takere Hapori: Learning in the Community

Aria: Year 9 and 10 Passion Projects

Some of the best learning for students is not in school classes. Some of the best learning is when students get to gain experience, think and create.

The passion projects for Year 9 and 10 students give students the opportunity to work on a project. Most students will work on their own independent project in the last two weeks of term 4. They will focus on a project related to something that they are interested in, or passionate about.

In the past students have produced art pieces, developed courses, resources like cook books and story books, built picnic tables for Kohanga, and developed apps to help people to learn te reo Maori.

There are criteria on the next page that shows how people will work on their projects and what good projects look like.

Shadow Days: Year 11

he year 11 students will have the opportunity to shadow a mentor in the area of work that they are considering as a pathway when they leave school.

This is not compulsory but students can apply to have the opportunity to shadow someone in the area of work that they are interested in. These have proven very valuable to our students in the past.

Ararau: Year 12 and 13 Internships

The Ararau Internships for Year 12 and 13 students gives our students the opportunity to work in areas that they would like to work in after they graduate from Nga Taiatea and university/polytechnic/wananga.

They can gain valuable experience, see if the career is what they would really like to do, and contribute to a real workplace?.

These internships are assessed with the same criteria as the criteria for the Aria projects.

For both the Aria and Ararau kaupapa students are challenged to work independently, to follow the set process, and present the project/internship experience and learning to their whanau.

Many students have benefitted from this kaupapa, and when students commit to doing this well, they get a lot of valuable learning and experience to help them as they move into the future.

We have had a number of students get offered jobs and scholarships because of their excellence work during their internships.
