Ngā Hākinakina: Sports

Waka Ama

Waka Ama is offered in Term 1 for tuākana and tēina.  Our uri have the opportunity to participate in tāne and wāhine crews with training taking place for the majority of Term 1.  This mahi culminates in our teams participating in the Waka Ama Nationals held towards the end of Term 1 each year.  There is a cost for all students who attend Nationals.

Pā Whutupōro

Pā Whutupōro is offered at Ngā Taiātea Wharekura with our uri participating in the weekly Secondary School Touch Module which is held during Term 1 and Term 4.  Depending on the level of interest, uri are able to join tuākana and tēina wāhine, tāne and mixed teams. 

Currently our tuākana wāhine team participates in the New Zealand Secondary School Touch Nationals held in December of each year.  We are hopeful we can provide more opportunities for other teams to attend this tournament. 

There are fees associated with  the local competition rounds as well as Touch Nationals.

Poirewa

Poirewa is offered to our uri to participate in the local weekly competition.  Tuākana wāhine and tāne teams play in the Saturday competition held in Term 1 and tēina teams compete in the Thursday competition which is usually held towards the end of Term 3 continuing until the middle of Term 4.  

We are hopeful our teams will be able to attend regional and national tournaments in the near future. 

There are fees associated with the  local competition rounds as well as those who attend Local, Regional or National Competitions.

Poitarawhiti

Poitarawhiti is offered in terms 2 and 3 with our teams participating in the local Hamiton competition.  We usually enter teams for Tau 9, Tau 10 and our Tuākana teams comprise of Tau 11, 12 and 13 players.  

Our Ngā Taiātea Premier team competes in the Upper North Island Secondary Schools (UNISS) competition which is held during Winter tournament week in the middle of Term 3. 

There are fees attached to the local competition rounds as well as those who attend tournaments and UNISS.

Poitūkohu

Poitūkohu is offered at Junior and Senior team levels, wāhine and tāne.  Poitūkohu is very popular at Ngā Taiātea Wharekura and players usually trial for teams at the end of Term one.  The weekly competition runs in Term 2 and 3.

Our Premier Junior teams attend the Junior Premiership Zone tournament held in the middle of Term 3, during Winter tournament week.  

Our Premier Senior teams attend the A Premiership Zone tournament held during tournament week and, if they qualify, the Secondary Schools Nationals held during the Term 3 school holidays.

We also send wāhine and tāne teams to attend the 3 x 3 Nationals held during Summer Tournament week late in Term 1. 

There are fees attached for the local competition rounds as well as extra fees for those who attend Local, Regional or National Competitions.

Kī o Rahi

Kī o Rahi is a mixed sport offered during Term 1 with our team attending the regional qualifying tournament and the National tournament.  Both of these tournaments are usually held in Term 1.  There are fees attached for those who attend Regional or National Competitions.

Rīki

Rīki is offered in Term 2 and 3. Our kura is part of an initiative to enable uri who attend Kura ā Iwi to participate at a regional and national level. This combined team, named Taikura, is made up of uri from all Kura ā Iwi within the Tainui region. There is an opportunity for wāhine and tāne, tuākana (Tau 11-13) and tēina (Tau 9 and 10) to participate. The Taikura teams attend the regional qualification tournament held in late Term 2 or early Term 3 and, if they qualify, then attend the Secondary Schools Nationals held during winter tournament week.  There are costs associated with each competition our teams attend.

Whutupōro

Whutupōro is currently not available at Ngā Taiātea Wharekura however, if uri would like to play, they are able to join a relevant team at Fraser High School.  If there is not an appropriate team available at Fraser High School we can liaise with other kura to find an appropriate team.
